How to Crop a PDF (Remove Margins & Edges)

5 min read · Updated 2026-10-12

Scanned PDFs come with souvenirs: thick black borders, crooked edges, acres of empty margin. They look sloppy, waste screen space, and make e-readers show tiny text swimming in white.

Cropping trims the page down to the content that matters. Draw a box, preview it live, apply — the document instantly looks cleaner and reads better on every screen.

E-readers are where cropping pays off most. A PDF with wide margins on a 6-inch e-ink screen shows text the size of ants. Crop the margins and the same document becomes genuinely readable — it's the difference between a PDF you tolerate and one you actually finish.

Step 1: Draw your crop box

Open the Crop PDF tool and drag the crop box around the content to keep. The live preview shows exactly what each page will look like — no guessing.

Step 2: Apply to one page or all

Uniform documents (same margins everywhere) can be cropped in one shot across all pages. Mixed layouts need page-by-page attention — batch the similar ones, hand-tune the odd ones.

Step 3: Check before you commit

Skim the preview for cut-off text, especially headers, footers, and page numbers near edges. Cropping only hides content outside the box — nothing is deleted, so you can always re-crop wider.

Cropping vs. resizing: know the difference

Cropping changes what's visible; the content keeps full resolution. If your goal is smaller file size rather than cleaner pages, you want compression instead — different problem, different tool.

Cropping for e-readers specifically

Be aggressive: cut deep into margins, and don't worry about losing white space — e-readers need text large. After cropping, the text reflows bigger on the small screen. This single trick rescues thousands of 'unreadable' PDFs.

Batch-cropping similar documents

A whole folder of scans from the same scanner? Same margins everywhere — crop once, apply to all pages, done. Consistency is the scanner's gift to you; use it.

Common questions

Does cropping delete content?
No — it only changes the visible area. The full page is still in the file; you've just narrowed the viewport.
Can I crop different pages differently?
Yes. Set per-page crop boxes for mixed layouts, or one uniform box for consistent documents.
Will cropping reduce file size?
Barely. Cropping hides pixels rather than removing data — use compression if size is the goal.
Why is there still a border after cropping?
You probably left a safety margin — crop tighter. Or the "border" is part of the page content itself (some scans bake it in).
Can I un-crop?
The hidden content stays in the file — just re-crop with a wider box. Nothing is deleted.
